On Thursday December 21st, the northern hemisphere will experience the Winter Solstice! The longest night and shortest day of the year come together and mark the time when the light of the Sun is reborn into our lives.
It’s easy to get caught up in our busy lives especially this time of year, with shopping and preparing for family gatherings, but I feel that it‘s at these times of busyness and stress, that it‘s most important to nurture our connection with Nature. Nature keeps us grounded and connected to the Earth which keeps us balanced and healthy in every way. No matter what practices or traditions you typically align yourself with, there are some simple ways you can honor and connect with Nature and welcome back the light!
Watch the sunrise or sunset. I am decidedly NOT a morning person, unable to clear the fog from my brain much before 10am even when I rise at 7:30am, so as much I would love to see the sunrise, I will be opting for sunset.
Perform a small fire ritual. This is a beautiful ritual that requires some inner reflection. Think about all the things in this past year for which you are grateful and express your gratitude. Next write down on a piece of paper at least one thing you wish to leave behind. Then on another piece of paper, write down a wish or dream you would like to manifest in this new year. (If you’d like to make it really powerful, write your wish/dream on a bay leaf!) Burn your pieces of paper in a fire, the first one to make room in your life for your wish to come true, and your second to convey your wish to the universe.
Go for a nature walk. Gather fallen evergreens to use as decorations.
Light candles of red, white, and/or green for rebirth, newness, and growth.
Take a ritual bath to cleanse yourself of the old and make room for the new. Light incense and candles. Throw in herbs such as sage, chamomile, peppermint, cinnamon, lavender, and/or rosemary. If you have them, gently submerge some rutilated quartz, smoky quartz, or citrine into the water. Toss in some Epsom salts as well. As you soak, visualize all that no longer serves your highest good being washed away and your body filling up and glowing with golden light. When finished, discard your herbs back to the Earth and don’t forget to retune or cleanse your crystals as you see fit. (If you need suggestions on this, don’t hesitate to contact me!)
Round out the day with a glass of mulled wine or hot cider!
